New Presby LASIK Technology Traditionally, people, when they have bad eyesight, are either near-sighted or far-sighted. Far-sighted people have a difficult time seeing things that are close up. It often hinders them when they are trying to read.
The clinical name for this is hyperopia. Then there are people who are near-sighted. This means that they have a hard time seeing things that are far away. When driving, these people have a hard time reading street signs, and it is a bad idea for them to travel this way without glasses. While most people fall under these two categories, there are others still who seem to have both problems.Wearing glasses can be a real hassle. They can get in your way and you always need to make sure that you have them with you. They can also cost a whole lot of money. It is pretty much unheard of to find glasses and lenses for less than one hundred dollars. They are usually more than two hundred. So worrying about glasses all the time just isn't the way to go. But what if you need glasses not only for seeing things close up, but for seeing things far away as well. This means that you fall under both categories listed above. This is called presbyopia. This often happens as people get older. Their eyesight diminishes and they can no longer see things well, whether or not they are close up or far away. In these times, you would need to get bifocals, or several different pairs of glasses. This just isn't right. Not only is this a hassle, but the glasses cost even more. For example, if you just have a problem with near-sightedness, your glasses may cost $250. But, if you had presbyopia and you wanted the exact same frames, it would likely cost you more like $500 because of the more expensive bifocal or progressive lenses. These costs can really add up. Laser surgery can help you, though. Typically, laser surgeons perform LASIK eye surgery. This is reserved for people with classic myopia or hyperopia, and not for people with both problems. Luckily, there is an alternative. You could look into Presby LASIK. This is a certain kind of LASIK surgery where laser surgeons perform on people with presbyopia. If you have this, then this surgery would be perfect for you. Unfortunately, Presby LASIK is not open to everyone right now. It is still in the experimental phase. Luckily, they are doing research every day so that it can one day go out on the market for everyone. If you are interested, there are studies being held all the time. This way, you can get the new LASIK surgery and be a part of the research. You can contact your eye doctor to see if they know of any local studies being done with this new technology. You may find a university or similar scientific lab in your area that is willing to do the surgery on you. Then you can end up with great vision just like people with regular eye problems. Now you can see that there still is a chance for you. In the next few years, this new form of LASIK, Presby LASIK, will be out on the market. Then you can take care of that pesky presbyopia that prevents you from being able to see both close up and far away without the help of expensive glasses. It's a good idea to way for this new technology because you will end up saving a lot of money in the long run when you don't have to buy glasses all of the time. |
