How to Choose a LASIK Eye Surgeon Making the decision to go through with optional surgery is hard. On one hand, you don't really need it. On the other, your life would be a lot better if you did. This is the kind of decision process that people go through when they are considering LASIK laser eye surgery. They have to make sure that this is right for them. That isn't always such an easy feat. There are a lot of things that go into a surgery such as this. First, you need to learn more about the surgery to see if it is right for you. LASIK can be a very invasive surgery. It involves the surgeons cutting open the cornea of your eye. The cornea is the clear part covering your pupil and iris. It acts like a camera lens and helps you focus on things. When you have bad vision, this is what is causing it. LASIK surgeons cut open the cornea, burn away some of the inside of it with a laser, and then replace the flap they made. If that wasn't bad enough, you also have to watch it all happen. They can't put you under for this procedure because you need to keep your eyes straight. All they can do is give you a mild numbing anesthetic. Other than that, you have to watch it all happen to you. This is often enough for most people to bow out of going through with it. Now that you know a bit about what goes on during the surgery, you can have a better time deciding if it is right for you. First, you should assess your need. How often do you wear glasses? If you need them in order to see even the most basic shapes, then you would be perfect for this procedure. Then again, if your eyesight keeps getting progressively worse, laser surgery doctors don't like to perform on patients with this problem. Be sure to talk to your regular eye doctor to see what they have to say about your eligibility. If your regular family eye doctor thinks you would be a good candidate for laser surgery, you should start looking for an eye surgeon. This is one of the most important steps in the whole process. You can immediately weed out bad surgeons based on price. You've most likely come across advertisements in local papers for LASIK surgery at cheap prices. Avoid these at all costs. LASIK eye surgery is very serious business, and you should work with someone who charges accordingly. That doesn't mean you should be paying an arm and a leg. The average laser surgery bill is usually between $2,000 and $4,000. If you find a doctor in that range, you can trust that they know what they are doing. You can usually find a good doctor in that range, so it wouldn't be wise to pay anything more than that. Before you actually choose the laser eye surgeon, you should check their credentials. Make sure that they have a diploma in this kind of medicine. There are some scam artists out there that have no business performing laser eye surgery. Since this is such an important part of your body and spirit, you need to make sure that you are working with the real deal. Try to do as much research as you possibly can. If you know someone that has had successful LASIK eye surgery, you can contact them for a referral. This is often the best way to find a really good surgeon. If you don't know anyone that has, you can still find a good surgeon with the right research. |
