Deciding on Laser Eye Treatment

If you have bad eyesight, you know how annoying wearing glasses can be.  You need to make sure that you have them at the ready whenever you may need to see something.  Eye glasses are also very expensive and cumbersome.  Some people prefer contact lenses, but even those are annoying and a bad choice for use.  They are expensive and they can really irritate the eyes.  Who wants to walk around with lenses on their eyeballs anyway?  For so long, these were really the only options that people had if they had bad eyesight and wanted to see.  Luckily, that isn't the case anymore.  Now there are laser eye surgeries that can permanently improve your sight so much that you would never need glasses or contacts again.

The most popular kind of corrective eye surgery is LASIK.  This stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.  The procedure works very well and it only takes about thirty minutes from start to finish.  Not everyone can get this surgery, though.  For one thing, certain professions prohibit their employees from getting laser eye surgery.  This is usually branches of the military.  If you are concerned about this, talk to your employer before getting the surgery or you may find yourself without a job.

LASIK corrective eye surgery is a very new technology.  Although it has been proven to help permanently change people's sight for the better, there isn't much known about the long term affects of the surgery.  Doctors and scientists don't yet know how the eyes hold up after something like this.  Because of this, there is a bit of risk involved with getting the surgery.  You should only go through with it if you are sure that you can handle that risk.  Some people can do it, and others can't.  You should evaluate your own feelings on the issue before you start any proceedings.

If you are sure that you want to get the surgery and you know that you are fine with the risk and the affect it will have on your job, your next step is to visit your regular eye doctor.  Let them know that you are considering LASIK eye surgery.  They will do an exam and evaluate your need.  They will also check certain things, such as the thickness of your cornea, to see if you are disqualified as a candidate.  This is a necessary step because your own family eye doctor will then need to refer you to a good LASIK eye surgeon.

There is a lot of preparation involved in getting ready for LASIK eye surgery.  For example, you will need to stop wearing contacts for many weeks before you get the surgery.  This is because standard contacts, both hard and soft, change the shape of your cornea.  If you go in for the surgery without letting your cornea get back to its natural shape, the measurements will be off and your surgery won't have the desired results.

You'll also need to stop wearing makeup for several days before the surgery.  Makeup and lotions can put tiny particles and debris around your eye, which can interfere with the surgery.  To raise your chances of a successful surgery, make sure that you follow these rules.  While it is a lot to take care of before the big day, it will be well worth it.

Laser eye surgery can be a very scary procedure.  They will be cutting your eye open in order to fix your vision.  Not only that, but you will be awake for it and will be able to see it as it happens.  Keep this in mind when making your decision.
