LASIK Recovery Information

A lot of people talk about the benefits or prices of LASIK eye surgery, but you rarily hear about the recovery.  It seems that most people really don't care about the recovery as long as the surgery goes well.  You should keep an eye on this aspect of the procedure, though.  The recovery from some surgeries can be very long and cumbersome.  While LASIK does have a fairly reasonable recovery, you should still learn as much as you can about it.  This way, you will know what to expect.  You will also know how to prepare for the occasion.

Just after the surgery, you won't be able to see well enough to drive.  This is because of the medication that they give you, as well as the immediate irritation that you get from the LASIK surgery.  Because of this, you should make sure that you have a reliable person there waiting for you.  This could be a friend or relative, so long as they can be there for you and bring you home.  They may even need to guide you to the car, depending on how bad the aftermath of the surgery.  With them there, they can get you home safely.  This is something that you need to have after the surgery, and your doctor will remind you of that fact.

Some people experience visual phenomena after the surgery.  This can come in many forms.  Some people have very hazy vision, often as they are standing in a dense fog.  This can last several weeks.  Although this is rare, it does happen.  Other people may see halos around lights and objects.  This is less annoying and invasive as the haze, but still can cause problems.  Others still have problems with seeing at night.  If this happens to you, you should avoid driving a car at night until the situation rights itself.  While these visual side effects of laser eye surgery recovery are annoying, don't be worried.  They should go away on their own.  If you still have problems seeing after a few weeks, you may want to go back to your eye doctor to see if there is anything wrong.

As your doctor may have already told you, they will be cutting a flap into your cornea.  They can't sew this back together so it will be lose for several weeks after the surgery.  In terms of laser eye surgery recovery, you may have a hard time dealing with this.  Your doctor will give you eye guards, which you wear at night.  This helps prevent you from rubbing your eyes while you sleep, causing irritation.

There are certain things that you can't do for a while after your surgery.  For instance, you shouldn't wear makeup for at least two weeks afterward.  You also shouldn't play any contact sports for at least four weeks.  They have these rules because your eyes may be affected by these activities.  For instance, the makeup can place debris in your eyes, irritate the cornea that just received surgery.  This could potentially cause bad medical side effects if you do not follow these rules.

Now you know more about what to expect once the surgery is over.  This will help you decide if you want to go through with it.  It will also help you prepare because you will know a bit about what to expect.  You should talk to your doctor about any other recovery information that they may have to give you.  A lot of LASIK eye surgery clinics will have very informative pamphlets on the subject.  Try to learn as much as you can before the big day.
